RED SHIFT compilation 2009 ink on paper 42 - 12"x12" image size (16"x15") paper size
|
Red Shift depicts the death-throes of late-stage capitalism, in its terminal American manifestation. An ongoing series of engraved collographs, the images stop short of realizing their romantic possibilities, both utopian and apocalyptic. I utilize the scientific fact of the Doppler Effect and a red shift (toward a lower energy) as a metaphor for backing away from history. The drawn then engraved images are printed onto damp paper, and later painted back into. Utilizing diverse sources such as fetish zed fashion commodities from the New York Times style section, foreclosed suburban track homes, and specific fragments from Currier and Ives lithographs, I am participating in a visual American palimpsest. The non-linear narrative of cultural artifacts flows through the project on a sea of red ink. |
